Passenger Tires Are Built For Comfort And Speed
Passenger tires or touring tires are the right choice if your vehicle is not going to be carrying or towing heavy loads. The rubber components in these tires are more flexible than those used in LT tires. This results in a smoother, quieter ride with good year-round steering and handling properties. They are original equipment tires on most sedans, hatchbacks, minivans and wagons.
For a sportier driving experience, consider high-performance tires. Optimized for speed and handling, they provide enhanced control and a stiffer, more precise ride. If you have a passion for the road, high-performance tires won't disappoint.

There are a number of differences, but it really boils down to construction. LT tires are built with beefed-up internal belts and cords enabling them to shoulder the extra load. The rubber compound can also differ as LT tires will endure more heat generated from carrying more weight.
On the outside, LT tires typically look different than passenger tires, recognizable by the squared-off shoulders as well as a deeper and more aggressive tread pattern. They can generate an increase in road noise - especially on the highway.
You can expect LT tires to ride stiffer than a passenger tire due to their heavy-duty construction and higher inflation specification. They can also affect fuel mileage since it takes more energy to turn a heavier LT tire.

Raw Materials And Rubber Compounds
The main raw materials of a tire are natural rubber, synthetic rubber, carbon black and oil. The share of rubber compounds in the total weight of a tire is more than 80%. The rest consists of various kinds of reinforcing materials.
Natural Rubber
Approximately half of the rubber is natural rubber from a rubber tree. The consistency of the rubber compounds' consistency in different parts of a tire varies. The rubber compound's consistency also varies depending on the intended use and model of the tire. For example, the rubber compound used in a summer tire for a passenger car is different from that of a winter tire.
Synthetic Rubber And Filler Substances
Approximately one-third of the compound consists of filler substances. The most important of these is carbon black, which makes the tires black in color. Another important filler is oil, used as a plasticiser in the compound. Furthermore, hardening or vulcanising agents, various booster chemicals and protective agents are used in the rubber compounds.
Mixing
In the mixing stage of tire manufacturing, the raw materials are mixed together and heated at a temperature of approximately 250 degrees Fahrenheit (120 degrees Celsius).
Developing and adjusting the recipes is an important part of the tire development work. Both the raw materials used in the mix and their amounts in relation to other materials are crucial for establishing the desired characteristics of a tire. For example, a winter tire must perform in cold winter driving conditions below 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius).
Component Manufacturing
The compounds are used in rubberising various components, such as cables, textiles or steel belts. The tire manufacturing process consists of putting together 10 -30 different different components that make up the tire. Most of the components are various kinds of reinforcements.
Assembling a Green Tire
Tire makers assemble the components into green tires using a tire-building machine. A green tire, or an uncured tire, is still missing its treads, which provide traction for safer driving.
When the components have been drawn onto the belt drum of an assembly machine and the frame of a tire has been set on the bulkheads of the stretching machine, the machine's loading wheel transfers the unity formed by the surface and the belt onto the frame.
The frame is then pressurized and stretched to fuse with the above-mentioned unity. This is how a green tire is manufactured.
Vulcanising And Curing a Tread Pattern
Green tires are vulcanized in curing presses. The high steam pressure conducted into the curing pad inside the curing press presses the elastic green tire against the tread pattern. In addition to the tire tread pattern, the green tire is engraved with the sidewall lettering, giving the tire its final appearance.
Inspection
Each passenger car tire is inspected both visually and by a machine. Attention is paid to any faults and defects with the tire's appearance in the visual inspection. The machine measures the pattern as well as radial throw and lateral force variation of the tire. After inspection, the tire is tested, labeled and transferred to the warehouse for delivery.

Tread Design Difference

Design Intent

Tread life

However, the above assertion is, of course, subject to variation. The wear of your tire's tread is determined by the terrain you usually travel on. These tyres also come with treadwear guarantees, which I recommend checking into when purchasing a new tyre.
The Rubber Compound
In the automobile industry, it's understood that as a vehicle's weight grows, a stronger rubber compound is necessary to withstand the progressive increase in frictional wear. Consider a 2,000-pound race vehicle with highly sticky rubber that gives exceptional grip or traction on the road for smooth corners.
Then there are tractor-trailers, which have tyre rubber that is as hard as concrete for lifespan, and trains, which have metallic wheels with an electromagnetic force that keeps the tyres on the track. Using tyres with a strong rubber compound comes with a cost! Because soft rubber provides excellent road traction and cornering grip, harsher compounds make it tougher to operate a vehicle when cornering.
Speed Rating
SUV tyres often have lower speed ratings than passenger vehicle equivalents, owing to knobbier treads that are less capable of dissipating persistent heat collected from high-speed riding.
Modern tyres are technological marvels. Rubber, both natural and synthetic, is of course by far the most used material, accounting for approximately half a tyre's weight. But other materials used in the manufacture of tyres include carbon black, silica, oil, sulphur, and steel, to name a few.
More than a large ring of black rubber, a tyre consists of many unseen layers within its rubber casing, and each layer performs specific functions. In the anatomy of a tyre, we look at its composition and structure.
Composition
Each tyre manufacturer chooses materials based on individualised technology, and each component is designed with specific functions in mind while working in conjunction with all the other components. There are three areas of composition:
Rubbers
Natural rubber- Provides durability and resistance to abrasion.
Synthetic rubber- Provides heat resistance.
Chemicals
Carbon black- Increases a rubber's strength.
Silica - Delivers better fuel efficiency and grip in the wet.
Oil- Helps soften rubber.
Sulphur- Provides elasticity to the rubber.
Vulcanisation accelerator- Helps build crosslinks between rubber and sulphur for better durability.
Anti-oxidant - Inhibits the oxidation of rubber.
Construction
Polyester- Used as a reinforcing material for body plies in a passenger tyre, which gives it its strength and resistance to damage.
Rayon/nylon/Kevlar - Artificial fibres used in passenger tyre body plies.
Steel wire - Used in a passenger tyre's beads and steel belts or bands.
Structure
Many different components are assembled and moulded together to create one single tyre. The tyre casing consists of all the inner components except the belt.

Tread
Tread is the outer visible layer of a tyre that has direct contact with the road surface. It makes up approximately one-third of a tyre's entire weight, provides cushioning, road grip, and water expulsion. Typically made with an abrasion-resistant, higher-grip rubber compound to provide traction and cornering capabilities.
Belt
Made from stiff, woven steel cord, the belt lies beneath the tread and provides strength and stability without adding too much weight. It protects the tyre carcass, helps retain the shape as it resists the centrifugal force of a spinning tyre, and increases the tyre's mileage performance. It also works together with the tyre's sidewall and tread to traction and cornering capabilities.
Body ply
Lying beneath the belt, plies are the skeleton of a tyre and are made from layers of textiles designed to flex without stretching. They add strength and help to optimise directional stability and rolling resistance. Most passenger tyre casings are multi-ply - polyester is commonly used as it adheres well to rubber, and nylon and rayon are also used due to the slightly different benefits they provide.
Inner liner
Used as an air seal inside the tyre, this airtight inner tube lies under the body plies and is filled with air when inflated.
Bead
The bead is designed to secure the tyre firmly to the wheel. Consisting of a steel loop manufactured from bundles of fine steel wire and coated in bronze or brass and then rubber to resist corrosion, beads are extremely strong.
Sidewall
A special rubber compound is used for the thicker rubber component that covers the tread and the bead. It gives the tyre stability and flexibility and is also designed to be weather resistant as well as resist external damage and abrasion.
